FAQs

  • Design Declassified symbolizes the transformation of plastic waste that was once ‘classified’ and inaccessible, into celebrated building materials, products, and custom design solutions that are now accessible to all.

  • All of our products feature 100% post-consumer and post-industrial plastic waste. Locally sourced in Grand Rapids Michigan.

  • Please! We will happily accept your cleaned HDPE #2 plastics. Contact contact@designdeclassified.com

  • 100% of our plastic is post-consumer & post-industrial waste that could have potentially ended up in our landfills or in our environment. We do purchase ethically and sustainably sources recycled materials. Are you a ethical and sustainable source? Reach out to - contact@designdeclassified.com

  • No added glue, resin, or color. All plastic waste is reused in manufacturing, along with offcuts. No binders or surface treatments are used, making it a perfect material for the circular economy.

  • Our materials can be used for surfaces, wall tiles, products and furniture designs.

  • We produce materials that are 21” x29” and come in four different thicknesses: 0.25”, 0.5”, & 0.75”. We are actively investing in machinery to make larger sheets.

  • Materials can be cut with traditional wood working techniques and machinery, such as CNC, waterjet, table saws, jig saws, etc.

  • Recycled HDPE is durable, chemical and corrosion resistant, UV resistant, food safe, impervious to water and machines easily.

  • Polyethylene or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE #2) is a fire CLASS 3 building material.

Contact studio@designdeclassified.com if you need CLASS 2 building materials.

Always check with local fire marshal before specifying.

  • High transit floors and temperatures over 185ºF.

  • HDPE (#2) and PP (#5). We are working to include more materials as we grow.

  • It's not dangerous to work with specific plastics as long as you follow proper precautions.

Different plastic types have different requirements and Personal Protection Equipment is required.

  • Many plastics are marked with a number 1-7, Check over your plastic to see what number it is. We work with #2 & #5

  • Plastic is a pretty strong material and as long as it's sorted and cleaned properly, in theory, it could be recycled many times. Depends on the plastic type, but the industry says it's usually around 10 times. But the point is to make long-lasting items to keep them out of our earth/ocean/atmosphere as long as possible.

  • When high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropylene (PP) is melted, it generally does not release harmful toxins or fumes. HDPE is considered a relatively safe plastic when it comes to melting and heating.

The melting process is less likely to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or harmful chemicals.

Colored HDPE or PP plastics may contain pigments or dyes that could potentially release fumes when heated.

However, when melting plastics, wearing protective equipment such as gloves, ventilators, and eye protection is worn at all times.

  • Absolutely not. Every one of our products is made with like material. The idea is that the entire product can be easily recycled again if needed.
